Sorrow

Sorrow
© 2011 Stephen Brown

I wrote this song some time back - initially it was just the banjo.  I added the piano part later, but this is the first time I actually played them together - that is, I tried it out yesterday, and it took me about 15 takes today to get it close to right.  The real trick is, since it doesn't have a steady tempo, it's pretty tricky to record the two parts individually, so I had to play them at the same time.  I figured that was worth putting on video...

Washed Me Clean

I was working on a different song that I just couldn't get finished, so I started a new one.  This is it.

 Washed Me Clean
© 2011 Stephen Brown

Jesus died and he saved my soul
Buried my sins in a great big hole
To tell the truth - he washed them all away
He'll do the same if you ask him to
Wash those sins all away from you
And brother, it's good to be clean
Now I've been bad and I've been good
Sometimes do the things I should
But nothing I can do can fix this ragged soul
Now it's something of a mystery
When Jesus gave his life for you and me
Ours souls - he made them whole
Jesus washed my sins away
When on that cross He died that day
Then from the grave He rose again
He won the victr'y over sin
Now you ask me why, tell you "I don't know
why sin get's it's teeth so deep in our soul"
Brother Paul wrote many years ago
He does the things that he don't want to
And what he wants is what he just don't do
But Jesus, he makes us whole
Jesus washed my sins away
When on that cross He died that day
Then from the grave He rose again
He won the victr'y over sin
Jesus died and he saved my soul
Buried my sins in a great big hole
To tell the truth - he washed them all away
He'll do the same if you ask him to
Wash those sins all away from you
And brother, it's good to be clean
Jesus washed my sins away
When on that cross He died that day
Then from the grave He rose again
He won the victr'y over sin
(Repeat Chorus)

Chord Names

Let's call this part of a series on music theory.  The first, Circle of Fifths, demonstrates the chord progression by the same name.  This demonstrates some of the chords by their names within the key.

The lyrics are nothing short of spectacular.

I'm singing on the tonic chord in the key of G
I'm singing on the sub-dominant chord in the key of G
I'm singing on the dominant chord in the key of G
Then I evade the cadence by going to the sub-mediant
Then back to the dominant
Dominant seven and home
I'm going home I'm going home
I'm going home I'm going home I'm going home
I'm going home I'm going home I'm going home

Let's do it again

I'm singing on the tonic chord in the key of G
I'm singing on the sub-dominant chord in the key of G
I'm singing on the dominant chord in the key of G
Then I evade the cadence by going to the sub-mediant
Then back to the dominant

Fluted Funk

Dave and I did this way back when - March of 2006.  It was an improvised everything.  Dave started playing the bass line, I grabbed the flute and dug in.  I hadn't played flute in several years, and given that, I'm pretty pleased with what I got.  Dave did his typical masterful work both in playing the instruments (everything other than flute) building the drum tracks, and mixing the whole thing together.

Vocal Refresh - Now We're Going to War

I did a refresh of the vocals on "Now We're Going to War".  Little more like I sing this as I wander around the house.  To see the original post (now with the new recording):

Finer Things

Finer Things

I don't buy cars or diamond rings
My friends buy all those finer things
They live in houses twice the size
And I just came to realize
I don't give you stuff like that
I ask about it, you begin to cry

Warm tears rolling down your face
I feel like I'm a big disgrace
I promised I would care for you
Thick and thin, I'm there for you
I gave you what you needed
But I never gave you what you wanted, too

And then your face lights up
I am baffled and surprised
And the look you give
is love and a hint of pity

You said
I don't care for diamond rings
Fancy cars and finer things
Let the Jones' buy their gem
I don't want to keep up with them
And the things I would like to have
I'd give up so that I could be with you

You promised you would care for me
Thick and thin you're there for me
There's one ring that I'd like to keep
I wear it even when I sleep
A symbol of some promises
The one you gave to me many years ago

Then my face lights up
I'm baffled and surprised
And now all that's left
Is warm love in your eyes

Love's a crazy thing

Cousins

Mom asked if anyone had anything special to share at the family reunion, to prep for it and we'd present it in whatever form.  I was on an airplane on the way to Fargo ND when I got the message, and the first couple lines of this song popped into my head.  I quickly recorded it on my iPhone (yes, I was singing to my phone on an airplane, surrounded by other passengers, at 33,000 feet).  Took me nearly half a year to get back to it, but here you go.

I accompanied the song with piano, and expected that I would play it that way at the reunion.  However, there was no piano handy, so I did it on guitar.  Here is how the song was originally conceived.

Oh, one more thing...

That little bridge section "We all wish..." - I didn't play that part at the reunion.  Seemed that folks were a little emotional, and didn't really need to push that any further.

Well my cousins are my brothers and my sisters too
All of this began when my mother married you
People think it's crazy but I tell them that it is true
But another big surprise is that I am my cousin, too

Now my father is my uncle and you wonder awkwardly
But he's not my mother's brother, which would be kind of icky
So my mother's sister's widower is husband to my Ma
Reminds me of that kid who sings he is his own grandpa

My mother has some nieces and a handful of nephews
They all call her aunt but they can call her mother too
Cause my mother went and did something not many people do
That's the way we ended with this great big motley crew

We all wish we had my dad
We all wish we had aunt pat
But you know that we're all thrilled
That you're together

Uncle carrie granddad red, Aunt orange mum dutts Nan
The two of you have loved us more than most people can
So we wish for you the blessings that you have given to us
Thank you for another year here at Canonicus

Now We're Going To War

This was part of the final push to finish FAWM.  I think it's a fun song, and I'll go back to re-record it at some point.

After listening, my wife asked me if I had been reading about Irish history, but alas, the story is entirely fictional.  Any similarities to anyone or anything are purely coincidental (unless there is a benefit to me to claim that it was intentional).

I recorded this sitting on a couch with my laptop on my lap. That meant there was no room for the guitar on my lap, so I was leaning over awkwardly as I played.  Everything recorded using the built-ins on the computer. In hind site, if I wanted to be this sloppy about it, I would have done better to use the iPhone.

Now we're going to war, boysNow we're going to war
So kiss your wives, and kiss your mums
You won't see them no more
Now pack your bags for battle
Pick up your shields and swords
It's time we set things straight once more
Now we're going to war

Jim Clancy is a rowdy man
Made some noise about this town
Well he never crossed the line with me
But it seems he crossed the crown

And he wouldn't go so quietly
For what the neighbors say
Ten soldiers came to take him
And eight of them got away

Now we're going to war, boys
Now we're going to war
So kiss your wives, and kiss your mums
You won't see them no more
Now pack your bags for battle
Pick up your shields and swords
It's time we set things straight once more
Now we're going to war

And Darby is a friend of mine
For many years gone by
His yes is yes, his no is no
He'll never tell a lie

But they came to pick him up one day
The charges, they weren't clear
Darby's pistol answer them
T'was the last thing that they'd hear

Now we're going to war, boys
Now we're going to war
So kiss your wives, and kiss your mums
You won't see them no more
Now pack your bags for battle
Pick up your shields and swords
It's time we set things straight once more
Now we're going to war

Instrumental Interlude

Now we're going to war, boys
Now we're going to war
So kiss your wives, and kiss your mums
You won't see them no more
Now pack your bags for battle
Pick up your shields and swords
It's time we set things straight once more
Now we're going to war

We believe in God and Counry
Law and order should aboud
But the crown is there to serve the men
Not the other way around

And we'll start no fight if we're left alone
Cause peaceful folk we be
But we aren't afraid to defend what's ours
We'll fight for liberty

Now we're going to war, boys
Now we're going to war
So kiss your wives, and kiss your mums
You won't see them no more
Now pack your bags for battle
Pick up your shields and swords
It's time we set things straight once more
Now we're going to war

It's time we set things straight once more
Now we're going to war

Be

Another iPhone recording.

I wrote this during a sermon last week. It didn't have anything to do with the sermon, per se, but the preacher was talking about different people having different gifts, and this was stirring about in my head.

Now, is it cheating if you have a 45 second song, and simply repeat it three times to get it over two minutes?

He is
And was
And always will be

Beautiful

Started while driving from Des Moines to Omaha on 16 February 2011, continued on flights from Columbus to Chicago and Chicago to Austin on 18 February 2011, finally finished off in Paige on 20 Feb.  Ooops. Nope, not done yet.  Okay, finished, at least for now, at home 22 Feb.

I was pretty excited about this song when I started it, but I just haven't been able to pull it together the way I wanted to.  Fought hard with the lyrics, still don't like them.  And it didn't come out the way I wanted it to musically, either.  But I need to take a break from this so I can finish FAWM a winner!

Beautiful

I can't stop thinking of the way you solved the riddle
All the sins that I was stained with, now you've washed me clean
What I had put asunder, could not be joined together
You found a way that you could make it whole again

I can't stop thinking of the way you gave forgiveness
You took three nails on a cross, You wore a crown of thorns
You suffered, died and then, you rose to life again
You conquored death for me and all who live in you

And You are beautiful
You made me beautiful
Everything's beautiful in You
You are beautiful
You made me beautiful
Everything's beautiful in You

I can't stop thinking of the the way you filled my spirit
Like a fire you breathed into me, and set my heart aflame
I want to live my life in you, the way you made me to
Cause if the Son has set me free, then I am free indeed

I can't stop thinking of the way you solved the riddle
How the death that I was cursed with you took off of me
If I keep my life I'm loosing, if I give it then I'm choosing
To spend it with you joyful in eternity

And You are beautiful
You made me beautiful
Everything's beautiful in You
You are beautiful
You made me beautiful
Everything's beautiful in You

And You are beautiful
You made me beautiful
Everything's beautiful in You
You are beautiful
You made me beautiful
Everything's beautiful in You

Say You Love Me

Well, it's Valentine's Day.  I didn't mean for it to work out this way, but it did.  Here's a silly love song (Didn't McCartney say we'd had enough of them?).  This was recorded using a lousy guitar, and built-in speakers in my computer, while at a hotel room in Des Moines, Iowa.

Say You Love Me
© 2011 Stephen G BrownStarted 13 February 2011 (3:30am) Paige , Texas

I've got some friends who say that you miss me
And you think of me all of the time
How could you walk away from me, baby
You know that you were meant to be mine

Three little words are are all that I'm asking
I need to hear them first from you
You told me you told me, but I never heard it
So how can I know that it's true

I just need you to say you love me
Baby tell me just one more time
You say it first, and I'll say it right back to you
Baby it's a state of mind

We sat in the cafe talked about music
Religion, politics and guns
The guy on the stage he was playing too loudly
That's when you claim that the dead was done

I heard you speak, but I didn't hear clearly
I asked you to say it again
I heard "I" and I heard "you"
But I didn't hear what came in between

I just need you to say you love me
Baby tell me just one more time
You say it first, and I'll say it right back to you
Baby it's a state of mind

I just need you to say you love me
Baby tell me just one more time
You say it first, and I'll say it right back to you
Baby it's a state of mind

Say you love me
Say you love me
Say you love me one more time
Say you love me
Say you love me
Say you love me, and I'll make you mine

I've never wanted for fear to be master
And so I'll have to stand him down
Letting you go would be a disaster
It's time for me to grab the crown

I'll swallow my pride and I'll banish my worries
I'll tell you what I'm going to do
I'm going to tell just what I'm thinking
I'm thinking that I love you

I just need you to say you love me
Baby tell me just one more time
You say it first, and I'll say it right back to you
Baby it's a state of mind

Say you love me
Say you love me
Say you love me one more time
Say you love me
Say you love me
Say you love me, and I'll make you mine

Say you love me
Say you love me
Say you love me
Say you love me
Say you love me

Great Plains of Mediocrity

The philosophers have long debated: Which is is the greater failure; to miss your goals, or to hit your goals poorly?

In an attempt not fall too far behind in my FAWM goals, I present a not ready for prime-time recording of some guitar playing.  Be thankful I cut out the flute part entirely.

Recorded on the iPhone with 'GigDaddy'.

Holy One

Written in 2009.  Recorded tonight.

Holy One
Copyright 2009 Stephen G Brown

From the rising up to the setting sun
I will seek you Lord, you are the Holy One
When my work begins, when my day is done
I will worship You, You are the Holy One

I love You and I sing Your praise
I will worship You for all my days
And when my days on earth are through
Forever I will worship You

Shout and sing children of Zion
For great in your midst is the Holy One (Isaiah 12:6)
You will be gathered up by God's own Son
Our eyes will look upon the Holy One (Isaiah 17:7)

I love You and I sing Your praise
I will worship You for all my days
And when my days on earth are through
Forever I will worship You

He will be despised and the nations scorn
But prince and king shall bow to the Holy One (Isaiah 49:7)
He will be made known to all of Adam's sons
Pure will be the name of the Holy One (Ezekiel 39:7)

I love You and I sing Your praise
I will worship You for all my days
And when my days on earth are through
Forever I will worship You

Come Live In Me

Come Live In Me
©2011 Stephen G Brown

Confused the east and west
When the sun comes up
Thought it was going down.

Thought day was night
Thought dark was light back then
I see much clearer now.

Come live in me that I might
Grow into the creation
That You made me for
Made me to be

These eyes have seen the Savior
A Light for all the nations
Joy of Israel
Sent to rescue me

I walked in counsel
That was all my own
It seemed to wise to me

But God's foolishness
is wiser than
Any man can be

Come live in me that I might
Grow into the creation
That You made me for
Made me to be

These eyes have seen the Savior
A Light for all the nations
Joy of Israel
Sent to rescue me

He offered up His life
And washed us clean
His death has set us free

He rose to live again
Gives life to those who dwell in Him
He made the blind to see

Come live in me that I might
Grow into the creation
That You made me for
Made me to be

These eyes have seen the Savior
A Light for all the nations
Joy of Israel
Sent to rescue me

Pharoahs of Ancient Egypt

The story is in the recording.  Recorded on the iPhone.

Oh the Pharoahs of ancient Egypt
They never like to fight
The Pharoahs of ancient Egypt
They think that there were always right
Oh the Pharoahs of ancient Egypt
They're never on your side
But they always like to be on the winning team

22 Blues

Another FAWM song.  Any questions?

22 Blues
©2011 Stephen G Brown

I know one thing that can clear those blues
Go out back and shoot some 22s
If the blue's too deep, it won't let you free
Time to bust out the 223

Blues fade away 'till you're feeling fine
Let it rip, with your auto 9
Things picking up, getting back your drive
Crack some caps with your 45

Bonnie Forsyth
We hammer on your cap
Spittin lead till the sun goes down
Let's make that thunder crack

Hey Mister
Don't put those guns away
That Barret 50 BMG
Could surely make my day

I can't tell you which tools to use
But you're better with a 10 guage to take down a goose
If you're hunting dove, I think it's plenty
With 7 and a half spit out a 20

That 410 will do to take something small
But for something much bigger it is no good at all
Pull out a 12 guage and try your luck
If your quarry is a pheasant, or maybe a duck

Bonnie Forsyth
We hammer on your cap
Spittin lead till the sun goes down
Let's make that thunder crack

Hey Mister
Don't put those guns away
That Barret 50 BMG
Could surely make my day

In the distance, a 12 point stag
I think you can take him with that 7 Mag
The shot's to long, I think it would be dirty
To take it with my iron sight lever 30-30

Something heavy from a bigger bore
The .577 cal Tyranasaur
Take it with you, when you go
To Africa for a water buffalo

Bonnie Forsyth
We hammer on your cap
Spittin lead till the sun goes down
Let's make that thunder crack

Hey Mister
Don't put those guns away
That Barret 50 BMG
Could surely make my day

Circle of Fifths

FAWM is back, and here is my first effort.  Actually, it is my second effort, but I finished this one first.  I'm going to try to make more polished recordings this year than I did last year, but I didn't want to miss out on the first day, so I did what I could with the time I had.

There is a musical puzzle in the lyrics of verses 1, 3, and 4.  Let me know if you get it.

Circle of Fifths
©2011 by Stephen G Brown

Well the circle of Fifths keeps on turning
I catch a glimpse of the sun in her hair
She says "five" I say "one" we reach four, we're not done
We sit around the fire with the children, and we're home

Wind whipped the waves in the water
And the same wind it tangled her hair
I was just mesmorized by the light in her eyes
So I held her hand and I never let it go

One night we sit by the fire
Four children nod off to sleep
Seven o'clock, then three hours gone
Six a.m. drinking two cups
My five fingers wrapping her hands

One word I offer is even
The reason you're sick suffering too
and if I've become one afford me a sea venture
there even music's got to survive the throne

Two Lips

I wrote and recorded this last year for FAWM (on the final day), but wasn't happy with the effort, so I didn't post it.  But, it's been a while, and I thought I should post something here.  Me on everything.
